a light has flickered one last time…and gone out

whenever I needed a gritty, right-on quote I looked to Maya Angelou

she was down home wise and shared her wisdom with us

what is there left to say, but…

“thank you Ms. Angelou”

from “Caged Bird” – Maya Angelou

“A free bird leaps

on the back of the wind

and floats downstream

till the current ends

and dips his wing

in the orange sun rays

and dares to claim the sky.

But a bird that stalks

down his narrow cage

can seldom see through

his bars of rage

his wings are clipped

and his feet are tied

so he opens his throat to sing.”

  1. Thanks for the tribute. When I learned of her passing, I was shocked. Did not know she was ill and was taken aback. She will be remembered my many as an iconic wise woman and will be deeply missed.

    • You’re welcome…I wish I could have done more! I feel my personal continuing tribute to her will be to read more of her words…I grew up in the rural south in the 1940s and 1950s…I saw and heard first hand what was happening to the African Americans who lived in our community…”man’s inhumanity to man”…it defies description or understanding.
